Stability AI Sparks Controversy in Generative AI with Stable Artisan Release

Stability AI is expanding its generative AI capabilities by introducing the Stable Artisan Discord bot for text and video content creation.

Officially launched today, this service allows users to generate images using Stable Diffusion 3 (SD3) and videos through Stable Video Diffusion (SVD) via Discord. This concept follows a successful model established by rival AI image service Midjourney since its 2022 debut.

Background and Access

Previously, Stability AI provided access to its core Stable Diffusion models through APIs, with model weights available on HuggingFace. Until February 2023, Stable Diffusion was also accessible via Clipdrop, now part of the AI startup Jasper. Stable Video remains available through the StableVideo.com site, owned by Stability AI.

Christian Laforte, co-CEO and CTO of Stability AI, stated, “The initial launch of Stable Artisan will allow us to monitor user engagement and ensure the Discord bot's functionality meets our quality standards before adding further features.”

Pricing Structure

Stable Artisan is a paid service offering a 3-day free trial. Plans start at $9 for the standard option, which includes 900 credits per month, escalating to $99 for the premium plan with 1,200 credits per month. Stability AI employs a credit system for image generation costs: 6.5 credits for an SD3 image, 3 credits for the older Stable Diffusion model, and 20 credits for video generation.

To get started, users can create an account on the Stability AI website and join their Discord server. Notably, the Stable Artisan service is currently separate from the newly announced Stability AI Membership.

Features of Stable Artisan

Stable Artisan goes beyond basic image generation, providing several editing and customization options reminiscent of those offered via the previous Clipdrop service. Key features include:

- Search and Replace: Identify and replace objects in images using simple language prompts, automatically segmenting the targeted object without needing a mask.

- Remove Background: Effortlessly eliminate backgrounds while preserving foreground elements.

- Creative Upscale: Enhance low-resolution images to up to 4K quality.

- Outpaint: Seamlessly extend images by adding new elements in any direction.

- Control Sketch: Transform rough sketches into high-quality images with precision.

- Control Structure: Generate images while maintaining the framework of an input image.

Looking Ahead: Stable Assistant

While Stable Artisan provides a user-friendly way to access Stability AI's image generation tools, further developments are underway. The service currently does not integrate Stable Audio, which debuted last month via API and on the StableAudio.com website. Other models for code and text generation, such as Stable Code and Stable LM, are not yet available through Stable Artisan.

Stability AI is also developing a broader conversational chatbot named Stable Assistant, now in beta alongside SD3. This web-based chatbot leverages Stability AI’s text-to-image and large language model (LLM) technologies to assist users through natural language dialogue.

“They address distinct user groups—both applications are actively developed by Stability AI,” Laforte noted.
