Webflow Acquires Intellimize to Enhance AI-Driven Webpage Personalization Features

Webflow, the innovative web design and hosting platform that has raised over $330 million and boasts a $4 billion valuation, is venturing into a new arena: marketing optimization. Today, Webflow announced its acquisition of Intellimize, a startup that utilizes artificial intelligence to deliver personalized website experiences for individual visitors. Although the purchase price remains undisclosed, sources indicate that it falls within the “eight-figure” range.

A significant portion of Intellimize's team—approximately 50 employees—will join Webflow. However, some staff members opted for outplacement packages or were laid off with severance; the company has not disclosed specific numbers. Vlad Magdalin, CEO of Webflow, stated that acquiring Intellimize aligns perfectly with Webflow's mission to help customers personalize and optimize their online presence.

“The common thread among our diverse customer segments is that they aim to create professional websites that not only look outstanding but also drive strong business results,” Magdalin explained. “Many of our customers and partners have expressed a desire for us to enhance their websites’ abilities to attract new business beyond their initial launch. Intellimize quickly stood out as an impressive solution that marketing and growth leaders highly recommended. It became clear that merging our products and teams could create a more powerful offering.”

Co-founded in 2016 by Guy Yalif, Brian Webb, and Jin Lim, Intellimize stems from their substantial marketing expertise. Yalif, who previously led vertical marketing at Twitter, and Lim, Yahoo’s former VP of Engineering, previously collaborated at Yahoo on personalized content strategies. The goal was to develop a platform capable of generating personalized web pages on demand.

The motivation for this innovation is compelling: a staggering 74% of consumers express frustration when they encounter non-customized website content, according to research from Porch Group Media. Businesses that engage in personalization not only see an increase in revenue but also experience more efficient marketing expenditures.

Intellimize leverages AI to dynamically generate web pages, automatically fine-tuning content based on user interaction and origin. Companies design a base website template, while Intellimize’s AI conducts experiments and adjusts elements to identify the most effective results for visitors.

Importantly, Intellimize isn’t alone in this space. Competitors like Amazon’s Personalize enhance tailored product and search recommendations, while companies such as Evolv AI and Optimizely (owned by Episerver) are automating aspects of A/B testing. Moreover, platforms like Adobe’s GenStudio and Movable Ink are pushing forward with innovative personalization techniques driven by generative AI.

However, Intellimize has carved out a significant presence in the AI marketing sector, having raised over $50 million from notable investors, including Cobalt Capital, Addition, Amplify Partners, and Homebrew. At the time of acquisition, Intellimize boasted a roster of high-profile clients such as Sumo Logic, Dermalogica, and ZoomInfo.

“The Intellimize team has already developed numerous personalization and optimization tools that we were contemplating creating in-house,” Magdalin remarked. “Their product and team exemplify world-class expertise in machine learning and AI, enhancing website personalization and conversion rate optimization, making it a valuable addition to the Webflow platform.”

What can clients of Intellimize expect following its integration with Webflow? Yalif emphasizes that significant disruptions are unlikely. Intellimize will continue to be offered as a standalone solution for non-Webflow clients, while increasingly integrating with Webflow’s services. Yalif will step in as Webflow's “head of personalization,” leading efforts to innovate personalization products.
