At CES 2025, BMW showcased its new AI Panorama iDrive system, which will be standard on all of its new models. The system starts with BMW's Neue Klasse EV lineup and gradually expands to the entire lineup. It includes three tiers of displays, an AI-based voice assistant, and the new operating system X.
A new revolution in the cockpit
1. 3D Head-Up Display (HUD): A 3D Head-Up Display projection located on the windshield provides real-time navigation information and advanced driver assistance information such as lane guidance and 3D turn previews to help drivers better understand their surroundings.
2. Ultra-Wide Panoramic iDrive Display: An ultra-wide display that extends from A-pillar to A-pillar inside the vehicle, integrating a digital instrument cluster that displays speed, range and battery information. Users can customize up to six low-distraction widgets such as Spotify player, air quality, weather, etc. with drag-and-drop operations to enhance the user experience.
3. Main touchscreen: The main touchscreen with OLED technology breaks the traditional 90-degree angle design by adopting a parallelogram shape. Drivers can operate more complex entertainment functions here and switch through smarter widgets and detailed 3D maps for a smoother operating experience.
4. Intelligent Steering Wheel Control: The touch buttons on the steering wheel add contextual lighting, such as a green light that illuminates when the driver assistance function is activated on the highway and disappears when the function is unavailable, ensuring driving safety.
Powerful AI voice assistant
BMW's AI voice assistant uses a large language model to implement natural conversational commands, and when the user says “Hey BMW,” a personalized emoji avatar appears. In the demo, BMW executives used the voice assistant to set up navigation destinations and activated the Sport mode with voice commands, accompanied by red lighting, customized sounds and performance monitoring widgets to enhance the ease of interaction.
Individualization and Future Prospects
In addition to the standard Sport, Efficient and Quiet modes, BMW will offer additional personalization settings, including customizable wallpapers, adjustable color themes and more opportunities to surprise the user. This high level of personalization not only enhances the user's driving experience, but also strengthens the brand's appeal.
BMW says Panoramic iDrive with OS X will be standard on all of its vehicles, starting with the upcoming Neue Klasse electric sedan and SUV. production of the first Neue Klasse model, the iX3 EV SUV, is expected to begin this fall, marking a significant advancement in intelligent driving.
