Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 24) is just around the corner, and it's set to unveil the highly anticipated AI-driven iOS 18, marking one of the most significant innovations in iOS history.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, iOS 18, along with iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, will feature a host of new AI capabilities. Highlights include an AI-enhanced Safari browser, improvements to the Photos and Notes apps, and an upgraded Siri and notification system. Notably, Apple plans to introduce AI photo enhancement, a redesigned Safari web search, and enhanced Spotlight search, delivering faster and more accurate results.
Siri is expected to undergo substantial improvements, leveraging Apple's proprietary large language model (LLM) technology for more natural voice interactions. Additionally, the Messages and Mail apps will automatically generate replies based on conversation context, while a smart summary feature will offer concise overviews of unread notifications, messages, web pages, notes, and documents. Users will also be able to transcribe voice memos directly, and Apple is working on custom emojis that function independently from existing ones, appearing as suggestions while typing.
These new AI capabilities are internally referred to as "Project Greymatter." Gurman indicates that lighter AI tasks will be processed on-device, while heavier tasks will be handled through the cloud. Moreover, last year's iPhone, iPad, and Mac chipsets will support these new functionalities.
An exciting aspect of iOS 18 is the redesigned home screen, allowing users to freely arrange app icons and customize background colors.
