Despite the earlier release of the OnePlus 12 lacking AI capabilities, OnePlus and OPPO, both under the BBK Electronics umbrella, are ambitious about future AI integration. They have announced plans to incorporate features powered by Gemini 1.0 Ultra into their smartphones.
Gemini Ultra, Google's most advanced AI, is currently not implemented in any smartphone, including Google’s own Pixel 8 Pro, which utilizes Gemini Nano instead. Consequently, comparisons between the OnePlus 12 and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra are inevitable. Notably, since Samsung has opted for Gemini Pro, OnePlus may soon offer a more robust AI feature set.
While OnePlus and OPPO have not disclosed a timeline for launching devices equipped with Gemini Ultra, they aim to do so "later this year." Following the launch of the new smartphone, OnePlus has started rolling out AI features, such as the AI Eraser, similar to Google’s Magic Eraser on Pixel devices. However, these features currently do not rely on Google's AI, leaving uncertainty about potential future upgrades.
Once Gemini becomes available on OnePlus and other devices, the OnePlus 12 is poised to become a more compelling flagship for Android users. Both companies plan to introduce a variety of generative AI features on smartphones, including generative photo editing and chat assistants, already seen in the Galaxy S24 and Pixel 8 series.
