Samsung Launches Galaxy Ring: First Smart Ring Available on July 24 for $399

Samsung surprised everyone at January's Unpacked event with the exciting announcement of the Galaxy Ring. This teaser hinted at significant validation for the emerging wearable technology category. While smart rings aren't a new concept, Oura has been the dominant player so far.

At Unpacked 2024, Samsung provided more insights into the Galaxy Ring, marking the company's first foray into this space as a leading hardware manufacturer. In a strategic move, Samsung has outpaced competitors like Apple and Google by introducing a health and fitness device that seamlessly integrates with its broader health ecosystem. Preorders for the Galaxy Ring will begin on Wednesday at a price of $399.

Samsung has dabbled in various wearables, including the IconX earbuds with heart monitoring features. Yet, the Galaxy Watch has always remained at the center of its wearable strategy. The introduction of the Galaxy Ring enhances Samsung’s portfolio for several reasons. First, Oura and similar devices have demonstrated considerable consumer interest in smart rings. Second, this new device complements rather than competes with the functionalities of the Galaxy Watch, adding depth to the user experience.

The ring's design does present some limitations with its smaller form factor and absence of a display, leading to a more passive approach to health tracking. Samsung touts “24/7 health monitoring,” backed by a robust battery life of up to seven days—matching Oura’s specifications.

The Galaxy Ring's primary focus is on sleep tracking, providing a sleep “score” derived from various metrics like movement, heart rate, and respiratory rate. It also monitors cycles by assessing skin temperature during sleep, making it less intrusive than a larger smartwatch.

Additionally, the Galaxy Ring leverages AI to compile data from sleep, activity, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability, offering "holistic insights and motivational encouragement." Notably, these features come without a subscription fee, giving Samsung an edge over Oura’s $6 monthly charge.

The Galaxy Ring is set to ship on July 24.
