Aitomatic's SemiKong: Revolutionizing Chipmaking Processes with AI Integration

Aitomatic has unveiled SemiKong, the world’s first open-source AI Large Language Model (LLM) tailored specifically for the semiconductor industry.

Introduced at Semicon West 2024, SemiKong aims to transform semiconductor processes and fabrication technologies, with the potential to reshape the $500 billion semiconductor market over the next five years.

Developed alongside FPT Software and utilizing insights from semiconductor experts within the AI Alliance, Aitomatic asserts that SemiKong outperforms existing generic LLMs such as GPT and Llama3 in industry-specific tasks.

SemiKong demonstrates significant enhancements in accuracy, relevance, and understanding of semiconductor processes. Even its smaller variants often exceed the capabilities of larger, general-purpose models in niche applications, paving the way for accelerated innovation and cost reduction throughout the semiconductor value chain.

Christopher Nguyen, CEO of Aitomatic and co-leader of the Foundation Models Focus Area within the AI Alliance, stated, “SemiKong is poised to redefine semiconductor manufacturing. This open innovation model, enabled by the AI Alliance, combines our collective expertise to address industry-specific challenges. At Aitomatic, we're developing Domain-Specific AI Agents with SemiKong to effectively resolve complex fabrication issues.”

Atsushi Suzuki, Director of Product Lifecycle Management DX at Tokyo Electron and an AI Alliance member, remarked, “As an industry expert collaborating through the AI Alliance, I believe SemiKong signifies a major advancement in integrating AI into semiconductor manufacturing.”

Daisuke Oku, a senior specialist at Tokyo Electron and a proponent of a Semiconductor Industry Model, added, “SemiKong marks the start of an exciting journey in open-source AI for semiconductors. Aitomatic’s innovative strategy has immense potential to drive substantial advancements in our field.”

Phong Nguyen, Chief AI Officer of FPT Software, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “FPT Software is thrilled to contribute to this groundbreaking project and explore the potential applications of this model. We are committed to fostering the convergence of AI and the semiconductor industry and reinforcing our role as a leader in shaping its future.”

As SemiKong reduces production costs, consumers may benefit from more powerful smartphones, laptops, and smart home devices at lower prices within a few years.

Anthony Annunziata, IBM Director of AI Open Innovation and AI Alliance Engagement, noted, “This initiative exemplifies the AI Alliance’s mission of fostering open collaboration, uniting varied expertise to advance AI applications in critical sectors like semiconductor manufacturing.”

SemiKong will be available for download on HuggingFace and GitHub starting July 9, 2024, serving as a foundational model for companies to develop proprietary solutions while leveraging industry knowledge. The next, enhanced version of SemiKong is scheduled for release in December 2024, with the first process-specific models anticipated by September 2024.

Yann LeCun, VP and Chief AI Scientist at Meta, the developer of Llama, commented, “SemiKong, built on Llama3, exemplifies the potential of open-source AI in driving specialized innovation. It underscores our advocacy for AI openness.”

The collaborative partners are dedicated to ongoing research and development, aiming to establish an ecosystem of AI tools that will propel the semiconductor industry into a new era of innovation and efficiency.
