Gmail on iOS Now Lets Users Ask Gemini Questions About Their Emails

Gmail users on iOS can now engage with Google’s Gemini chatbot to manage their inbox directly within the app, as announced by the company this week. This innovative feature, called Gmail Q&A, was initially launched for Android users back in August.

Currently, it’s accessible to Google One AI Premium subscribers and Google Workspace users with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-ons.

Gmail Q&A is designed to help users promptly answer specific email inquiries. For example, you can ask questions like, “What was the company’s expenditure on the last marketing event?” or request Gemini to display unread messages from a particular sender. You can also ask for summaries of emails related to a specific topic: for instance, say “Fill me in on the emails about quarterly planning.”

According to Google, while Gmail Q&A currently retrieves information exclusively from your inbox, future updates will expand its capabilities to also access data from Google Drive.

The traditional search bar in Gmail will remain, but a Gemini button will be added next to it. This feature encourages users to leverage AI for specific email queries, moving away from conventional search methods.

It appears that Gmail Q&A may not be extended to free Gmail users in the near future, as Google is actively marketing this feature to promote its subscription plans. This strategy aims to enhance revenue opportunities through Gemini.

Like many tech companies, Google is integrating AI functionalities across its suite of products, including Google Docs, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more.

The introduction of Gmail Q&A coincides with the launch of revamped "summary cards" that streamline inbox organization. These cards allow you to track packages, check in for flights, set reminders, and mark bills as paid—all within the email app.

With these recent updates, Google is ensuring that its email service remains competitive, especially as Apple rolled out several Gmail-like features in its Mail app with the release of iOS 18.
