Huawei Develops AI Solutions for Telecommunications at MWC 2024

Huawei has unveiled an innovative foundation model tailored specifically for telecommunications companies, dubbed the Telecom Foundation Model. This model is designed to enhance operational efficiency and empower employees through sector-specific copilots and scenario-based agents that facilitate natural language interactions. For instance, it can streamline complex procedures for call center staff and deliver multimodal assessments for various use cases, such as service provisioning.

During the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Yang Chaobin, Huawei's president of ICT products and solutions, emphasized that this foundation model will enable telecommunications operators to enhance employee capabilities and elevate user satisfaction, ultimately driving increased network productivity.

In a subsequent keynote address, Li Peng, the president of ICT sales and services at Huawei, elaborated on the transformative potential of AI for the telecommunications industry. He cited forecasts predicting that by 2026, AI will generate a staggering 100 billion gigabytes of data and catalyze a tenfold increase in data traffic. Furthermore, the company anticipates that generative AI will produce over 250 billion images in 2026 alone—an output ten times greater than the total number of images created by humans over the past century.

As advancements in AI-powered capabilities emerge, Peng underscored the need for robust infrastructure, highlighting the importance of new frameworks for collaborative storage and computing across cloud, edge, and devices. Looking ahead, he projected that the intelligent economy could be valued at nearly $19 trillion by 2030, urging the industry to build a strong IT foundation for a thriving intelligent world.

The launch of this telecom-centric foundation model signifies a major step toward harnessing the capabilities of generative AI in telecommunications, presenting new opportunities for enhancing service delivery and operational efficiency.
