Retired Army General Takes Command of Cybersecurity Initiatives at OpenAI

OpenAI has made a significant move to bolster its commitment to cybersecurity by appointing General Paul M. Nakasone to its board of directors. As a member of the Safety and Security Committee, General Nakasone will play a pivotal role in guiding the board's decisions regarding the safety and security of the company's projects and operations.

General Nakasone brings a wealth of experience to OpenAI, having previously established and led the U.S. Cyber Command. His impressive track record includes commanding the National Security Agency and leading elite cyber units in various locations, including the U.S., South Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan. His expertise in navigating complex cybersecurity challenges will be invaluable in addressing the potential threats that artificial intelligence might pose.

“OpenAI’s dedication to its mission aligns closely with my own values and experience in public service,” Nakasone stated. “I look forward to contributing to OpenAI’s efforts to ensure artificial general intelligence is safe and beneficial to people around the world.”

In light of recent challenges, the importance of Nakasone's role cannot be overstated. Earlier this year, OpenAI identified at least five influence operations utilizing its models to disseminate misinformation on critical issues such as the Ukraine war, conflicts in the Middle East, and elections in India and Europe. Nakasone's appointment enhances the board's capacity to stay informed about potential cybersecurity threats and to develop strategies to mitigate them.

This appointment is part of a broader restructuring of OpenAI's board, which has expanded from three to ten members following last November's significant changes. Microsoft's vice president for technology, research partnerships, and operations, Dee Templeton, occupies a non-voting observer position on the board. Other prominent figures joining the board include former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Bret Taylor, the former co-CEO of Salesforce. Notably, Quora co-founder Adam D’Angelo remains the only continuing member from the previous board.

With the experience and strategic vision that General Nakasone brings to OpenAI, the organization is well-positioned to enhance its safety protocols and ensure that artificial intelligence technology evolves responsibly, guarding against misuse while promoting its benefits for a global audience.
