Sony, in collaboration with Honda, is set to introduce its electric car, Afeela, in 2025. During a recent press conference, Sony announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft to enhance AI and other technologies within the mobility sector as they prepare for the car’s launch.
Izumi Kawanishi from Sony showcased the progress of Afeela since its initial reveal at CES. During the CES 2024 presentation, Kawanishi demonstrated the car's capabilities by using a PlayStation 5 controller to drive it on stage.
The Afeela car is packed with immersive technology designed for gamers, featuring vibrant front dashboard screens and rear passenger displays for gaming enjoyment. Microsoft executive Jessica Hawk joined Kawanishi to discuss their collaboration, which will leverage AI advancements and Microsoft’s Azure computing infrastructure. This partnership marks a rare moment of cooperation between Sony and Microsoft, aiming to transform user interactions with mobility.
Additionally, Sony has partnered with Polyphony Digital to infuse its expertise into the car's development, making it akin to a new gaming platform. Kawanishi noted that Qualcomm will contribute advanced driver assistance systems to enhance safety features. Furthermore, Sony unveiled a new head-mounted display for content creation, which was also featured at the Siemens keynote.
