Wand.app Secures $4.2M to Expand AI-Driven Creative Tool for Artists

Wand.app, an innovative AI-driven creative platform, has successfully secured $4.2 million in seed funding, led by O’Shaughnessy Ventures. This tool empowers artists by allowing them to manually customize and visualize their creative ideas. Unlike conventional AI-driven platforms that often restrict user control, Wand.app seeks to enhance the creative process, offering a unique blend of personalization and visual tools.

Established in December 2021, Wand is the vision of CEO Grant Davis. While many tools assist users in generating intricate images from text prompts, Wand.app prioritizes collaboration over replacement, aiming to complement human creativity rather than diminish it. "We aspire to create an environment where artists can translate their precise visual concepts into reality without compromise," Davis explained. "Textual prompts are inherently ambiguous, making it difficult to convey intricate visual details. Wand addresses this with an illustration tool that transforms users' sketches—whether new creations or modifications to existing images—into expanded visual suggestions."

Wand empowers artists to train a personal AI to align with their distinctive style, ensuring that the results consistently reflect their desired aesthetic. The editing process occurs on a freeform art board, accommodating both individual and collaborative work.

The tool is currently in beta testing with select users, and the company plans to officially launch Wand in the coming months. "Wand focuses more on artists and illustrators than other creative AI services by rewarding visual art skills," Davis noted. "Our ideal users include professionals engaged in prototyping, iteration, mood-boarding, or collaborative creative projects with clients, teams, and creative directors. This includes roles like game developers, concept artists, branding experts, and architects. However, Wand is user-friendly enough for hobbyists as well, so I anticipate a diverse user base."

Wand currently operates on an in-app credit system to cover GPU expenses, with plans for subscription models similar to other creative AI options such as DALL-E 2, Midjourney, and Dream Studio.

Davis highlighted how Wand distinguishes itself from other AI-driven creative tools through its mobile, tablet, and soon-to-be desktop compatibility. This fluidity enhances the editing experience, allowing for more comprehensive graphical tools and compatibility with devices like the Apple Pencil. “Unlike most AI tools that are predominantly web-based, Wand prioritizes artists’ needs, leveraging their illustration expertise to provide higher visual control without overwhelming users with technical jargon or complex interfaces.”

With the new funding, Wand aims to develop collaborative team features and innovative creative tools that will expand to desktop users. The company is also invested in enhancing foundational model architectures and improving fine-tuning techniques.

The funding round attracted contributions from Betaworks, Charge Ventures, Long Journey, Notation Capital, Twelve Below, and BDMI, along with angel investors such as Amy Wu, Eden Chen, Jared Hecht, and Steve Martocci.

Looking ahead, Wand is exploring opportunities for artists to share or sell models they have customized based on their work. Given the ongoing debates regarding large foundational models trained using web-scraped content—including pieces from artists lacking consent—Wand believes this feature could pave the way for recognizing and compensating artists appropriately. However, the company is proceeding cautiously to ensure that any marketplace environment is secure against malicious activities, including the theft of artistic work or dissemination of harmful content.

Wand is also considering applications for 3D modeling, envisioning a future where users design in 2D and AI seamlessly translates these concepts into 3D models. Davis asserts that Wand’s existing toolset is well-suited for developing this promising capability.
