Yahoo News App Revamp: Now Introducing AI Summaries on the Homepage

Yahoo's AI initiatives are far from over. The company has recently introduced AI-enhanced features for Yahoo Mail, including a version inspired by Gmail’s Priority Inbox and AI-generated email summaries. Today, Yahoo is launching an AI-driven version of its Yahoo News app, utilizing technology acquired from its latest investment in Artifact. Moreover, Yahoo has additional AI projects in the pipeline, particularly for its Yahoo News platform on the web.

Code elements on the newly revamped Yahoo News website suggest that the company is testing an AI summaries feature. This initiative appears designed to help users quickly digest news updates without the need to read entire articles.

Although the Yahoo News app is incorporating insights from Artifact for its AI functionalities, the AI summaries found on Yahoo News are not directly linked to the acquisition of the popular AI news app developed by the founders of Instagram, which ultimately shut down due to limited audience reach.

When asked for details, Yahoo confirmed that its AI summaries on the web have been in limited testing for several months, affecting only a small percentage of article pages within the Yahoo News web experience. This limited rollout likely explains why most visitors to the Yahoo News website have yet to encounter these AI summaries.

The underlying technology behind Yahoo's AI summaries remains largely undisclosed; however, they are expected to be presented to users in a lightbox format, a web component used to display content. Yahoo has not provided additional specifics on the technology or a timeline for broader public launch, though they do maintain a partnership with OpenAI for the Yahoo News mobile app.

With the Artifact-inspired redesign of Yahoo News and the recent introduction of AI features in Yahoo Mail, it's evident that Yahoo is betting on artificial intelligence to reinvigorate its traditional web offerings. Whether these AI enhancements will successfully attract a new audience is still uncertain.
