YouTube has announced new measures to combat AI misuse and misinformation, aimed at enhancing transparency around AI-generated content, including deepfakes. The updated policies will allow individuals to request the removal of AI-generated or altered videos that simulate identifiable individuals, such as their face or voice. This request process is available via YouTube's privacy procedures; however, the platform will evaluate each case based on criteria like whether the content is satire or if the individual is a public figure.
Musicians and their representatives will likewise be able to request the removal of content that uses AI to replicate their voice. These policies come as deepfakes gain traction online, particularly in contexts that can misrepresent or sexualize public figures.
In addition to facilitating content removal, YouTube will require that all altered or synthetic media is clearly labeled. Creators will have new options to disclose this information; failing to do so may result in content removal, suspension from the YouTube Partner Program, and other penalties. The platform has promised to engage with creators regarding these changes before implementation. For viewers, content flagged as "altered or synthetic" will be accompanied by a prominent banner in the video description, with an option for further information. Additionally, YouTube reserves the right to remove AI-generated videos that contain disturbing content, regardless of labeling.
