ABB Robotics and AUAR Unveil AI-Powered Microfactories for Smart Home Construction

ABB Robotics is joining forces with the UK-based tech start-up Automated Architecture (AUAR) to pioneer AI-driven, robot-powered micro-factories dedicated to producing low-cost, sustainable homes. This groundbreaking collaboration aims to establish a worldwide network of microfactories that automate the production of energy-efficient housing using sheet timber.

The innovative process involves robots cutting timber sheets into precise components and assembling them into modular units, which are subsequently transported to construction sites. This automation of the construction process addresses critical skills shortages while enhancing sustainability and improving health and safety conditions at manufacturing facilities.

Craig McDonnell, ABB’s managing director, emphasized the transformative potential of this technology: “The increasing capabilities of robots, empowered by advanced vision systems and AI, alongside their speed, flexibility, and consistency, position them as the ideal solution to meet the rising demand for affordable, high-quality, sustainable housing.” According to a recent market survey, a staggering 95% of building firms consider sustainability as either “important” or “very important” to their operations, and 38% view robotic solutions as a means to reduce waste. The partnership with AUAR opens new avenues for homebuilders to deliver affordable, sustainable homes on a larger scale.

ABB's robots are already playing a crucial role in automating modular assembly projects across the globe and are actively involved in academic initiatives that explore innovative methods for integrating robotic automation into construction processes. This collaboration comes on the heels of ABB's partnership with Porsche Consulting, focusing on developing advanced automation techniques for modular housing manufacturing.

McDonnell noted that the collaborations with AUAR and Porsche represent a significant advancement in ABB’s mission to boost the construction sector’s adoption of robotic automation. “By addressing the dual necessities of creating more affordable homes while minimizing the environmental impact of buildings throughout their lifecycle, automated modular construction offers a valuable opportunity to rethink traditional building methods,” he stated.
