IBM Survey: How Global Tennis Fans Are Embracing AI for Real-Time Updates and Unique Insights

Recent research highlights the positive perception of artificial intelligence (AI) among global tennis fans, particularly regarding its potential to enrich their viewing and overall sports experience. As anticipation builds for the Wimbledon tennis championships in July, a survey conducted by IBM gathered insights from over 18,000 sports enthusiasts across ten countries, including the U.S., India, and Spain, to explore AI’s integration into sports.

The findings reveal that over half (55%) of tennis fans worldwide believe AI has a beneficial impact on the sport, while 60% agree that it enhances fan engagement. When questioned about how AI could elevate their viewing experience, respondents identified several key areas for improvement: 36% highlighted the need for real-time updates, 31% favored personalized content tailored to their preferences, and 30% expressed interest in receiving unique insights about matches.

Moreover, the survey revealed that 31% of tennis fans actively use multiple devices to watch different matches simultaneously, and 45% rely on various devices to access more information during live events. In response to these insights, IBM has introduced a groundbreaking generative AI feature known as "Catch Me Up," designed specifically for digital viewers. This innovative tool generates highlights and critical insights, helping fans stay informed across multiple concurrent matches.

“Our latest research underscores that fans are increasingly recognizing the positive influence technologies like generative AI can have on their digital experiences,” remarked Jonathan Adashek, IBM’s VP of Marketing and Communications.

Beyond enhancing viewer experiences, the survey also shows that fans anticipate significant advancements in the sport itself due to AI. A notable 75% of respondents believe AI technologies will enhance player training, while 74% expect improvements in game strategy, 71% cite advancements in coaching, and 66% see potential for discovering new talent.

This growing appreciation for AI among tennis fans signals a transformative shift in how the sport is consumed and experienced, paving the way for richer interactions and deeper insights into the game. As technologies continue to evolve, the future of tennis promises to be more engaging and insightful than ever before.
