DeepL has secured $300 million in a recent venture funding round, set to propel businesses toward enhanced content translation capabilities through artificial intelligence. Established in 2017, DeepL is a German startup renowned for its cutting-edge AI-powered translation tools. Its innovative Language AI platform enables companies to efficiently translate a variety of communications, including marketing materials.
This funding round was spearheaded by Index Ventures, with participation from ICONIQ Growth and Teachers’ Venture Growth. Notable existing investors, including IVP, WiL, and Atomico, also took part in this round. With this investment, DeepL's valuation has soared to an impressive $2 billion. The company plans to channel these funds into research and product innovation, as well as expanding its global footprint by hiring more talent across research, engineering, and product development sectors.
"We're reaching a pivotal moment in the AI revolution, where businesses are starting to distinguish between mere hype and real solutions that are secure and effectively address actual challenges," stated Jarek Kutylowski, founder and CEO of DeepL. He emphasized that this influx of investment arrives during a significant transformative period for the company, underscoring the essential role of their Language AI platform in tackling the intricate linguistic hurdles faced by global enterprises today.
DeepL has invested heavily in developing specialized AI models tailored specifically for translation tasks. These models fuel its enterprise-focused Language AI platform, which harnesses advanced technology to adapt content for targeted markets seamlessly.
The company reports that its customer base has grown to over 100,000 businesses across various sectors, including healthcare, retail, and manufacturing. Prominent clients, such as Zendesk, Deutsche Bahn, and Coursera, rely on DeepL's solutions. Adrian McDermott, Chief Technology Officer at Zendesk, remarked, "At Zendesk, we witness firsthand how integrating AI tools into customer experience transforms operations. DeepL's leading translation technology exemplifies this impact. Accurate AI translation empowers companies—from startups to large enterprises—to scale globally, connecting with prospects and existing customers in innovative ways."
In a compelling demonstration of its technology, DeepL showcased its translation capabilities with the humanoid robot Ameca, enabling it to communicate in multiple languages. By merging DeepL's technology with OpenAI's GPT-3 language model, engineers successfully taught the robot to fluently converse in Japanese, German, Chinese, and French.
"Our commitment to ongoing growth and innovation remains steadfast as we expand our solutions to ensure they stay at the forefront of quality, precision, and security," Kutylowski added. "Our vision is to create a future where every business, regardless of its location, can operate seamlessly on a global scale using our AI solutions."
With the continual evolution of AI technologies, DeepL is poised to redefine language translation, empowering businesses to transcend linguistic barriers and unlock new market opportunities.
