Air Force Introduces ChatGPT-Inspired Tool for Personnel to Harness Generative AI Capabilities

The United States Air Force is actively promoting the exploration of generative AI technology among its personnel by introducing a new chatbot, NIPRGPT, designed to foster innovation in a responsible manner. This tool, reminiscent of ChatGPT, is integrated into the Air Force’s Dark Saber software, allowing staff to engage in natural, conversational interactions. Users can leverage NIPRGPT for a variety of tasks, including answering questions, assisting with coding, and generating responses for written communication.

Venice Goodwine, the chief information officer of the Air Force, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “Recent generative AI roundtables involving industry and academia have demonstrated that this is a rapidly evolving field. Now is the perfect opportunity to empower our airmen and guardians to develop essential skills in tandem with ongoing modernization efforts across the federal government and the Air Force. This tool is an integral part of those efforts.”

In an effort to make this innovative technology accessible, the Air Force is providing NIPRGPT to its units at no additional cost, motivating personnel to incorporate it into their daily tasks. The organization is committed to facilitating real-world testing, examining the resource implications of running NIPRGPT and ensuring adherence to security regulations. Users are encouraged to provide feedback which will help shape the policies governing the Air Force’s use of generative AI.

Alexis Bonnell, chief information officer for the Air Force Research Laboratory, highlighted the importance of this tool, stating, “NIPRGPT serves as a crucial bridge to ensure our teams have access to the best tools while navigating stringent security requirements. Transforming our interactions with unstructured data is a journey that requires learning and adaptation. This platform will give airmen and guardians the opportunity to develop their skills and gain familiarity with emerging technologies as they become available.”
