ChatGPT Enhances ‘Custom Instructions’ Feature for Free Users

OpenAI has announced an exciting expansion of its custom instructions feature, now available to all users, including those on the free tier of ChatGPT. Initially launched in July as a beta for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, this feature empowers users to provide specific preferences and requirements for how the AI chatbot responds.

This functionality significantly enhances user experience by eliminating the need to repeatedly input the same instructions during each interaction with ChatGPT. For instance, users can request that ChatGPT limits its responses to a particular character count or adjust the tone of its answers to suit their needs.

During its July launch, OpenAI demonstrated how this feature could assist educators. For example, a teacher creating a lesson plan no longer has to repeatedly mention that they teach 3rd grade to receive tailored, relevant responses. Additionally, developers can utilize custom instructions to receive answers in their preferred languages or avoid those they don’t wish to use.

“Through our conversations with users across 22 countries, we’ve deepened our understanding of the essential role steerability plays in enabling our models to effectively reflect the diverse contexts and unique needs of each person,” the company stated.

Previously, access to custom instructions was exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, which costs $20 per month. However, this week, OpenAI has rolled out the feature to both free and Plus users, including on mobile platforms like iOS and Android. Moreover, users can now employ custom instructions even when chat history is disabled, according to OpenAI.

To get started with custom instructions, simply click on your name and select “Custom instructions” from the menu. The company has also announced plans to expand this feature across the EU and U.K. in the near future.
