Three More Automakers Integrate ChatGPT into Their Vehicles for Enhanced Connectivity

ChatGPT is set to enhance the driving experience in new vehicles from three leading European automotive brands: France's Peugeot, Germany's Opel, and the United Kingdom's Vauxhall. These models will incorporate the AI-driven SoundHound Chat AI voice assistance system, aiming to streamline tasks for drivers. This technology is already deployed in cars across 11 countries including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K. By the end of July, the rollout will expand to cover 17 countries and support 12 different languages.

This initiative marks a significant advancement for Stellantis, the global automotive powerhouse that includes renowned U.S. brands like Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, and Ram. Earlier in April, DS Automobiles, another Stellantis subsidiary, became the first in the world to enter full production with a voice assistant utilizing the latest generative AI technology.

While new models from Peugeot, Opel, and Vauxhall will come equipped with integrated ChatGPT, existing vehicles will also benefit from over-the-air software updates, ensuring drivers stay connected with the latest enhancements. SoundHound, based in Santa Clara, California, has designed ChatAI to perform a diverse array of functions. Drivers can manage navigation, make phone calls, and receive real-time sports updates and weather forecasts—all without taking their hands off the wheel.

The integration of ChatGPT transforms the in-car experience, allowing for more natural conversations and enhancing communication between the driver and the vehicle. For instance, the system can provide personalized route recommendations between cities, offering real-time updates on weather conditions, attractions, and EV charging stations along the way.

Michael Zagorsek, COO of SoundHound AI, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Stellantis, highlighting its role in pushing the boundaries of innovation in the automotive sector. "Our partnership has placed both companies at the forefront of delivering a next-generation consumer experience defined by natural conversation," he noted.

The momentum for integrating generative AI into voice assistance systems within vehicles is rapidly increasing. In recent weeks, Volkswagen announced that ChatGPT would be embedded into several of its models, including its entire range of ID electric vehicles. This advancement was quickly echoed by Audi, made possible through the deployment of Cerence’s Chat Pro solution, paving the way for advanced voice-control features across various automotive brands.

As these developments unfold, drivers are set to experience a revolution in the way they interact with their vehicles, driven by cutting-edge AI technology that prioritizes convenience, safety, and engagement on the road.
