Acquisition of Security Robot Manufacturer Enhances Company’s Focus on AI Innovations

Cobalt, a startup specializing in security robotics, has undergone a significant transformation following its acquisition by investor Dean Drako. Now rebranded as Cobalt AI, the company is shifting its focus toward innovative AI-powered security solutions. This name change reflects a commitment to moving beyond traditional robotics and enhancing security through advanced technology.

Founded in 2016, Cobalt initially gained attention for its AI-driven robot security guards, which provided autonomous onsite patrols. In addition to its robotic offerings, the company has developed a comprehensive AI suite designed for effective monitoring of security and facilities management operations.

Dean Drako, who previously founded cybersecurity firm Barracuda Networks and serves as the CEO of Eagle Eye Networks, will take on the role of chair for Cobalt AI. Ken Wolff will continue to lead the company as CEO. Under Drako’s leadership, Cobalt AI plans to strengthen its investment in research and development, as well as sales execution, to drive innovation and growth in the security technology space. Although specific financial terms were not disclosed, both executives express excitement about the partnership.

Cobalt AI's line of security robots is equipped with over 60 sensors, including lidar and thermal cameras, enabling them to patrol facilities autonomously. The robots are reported to conduct five times more patrols per shift compared to human security personnel, allowing human professionals to focus on more critical response tasks rather than constant observation.

In August 2022, Cobalt enhanced its robotic patrol capabilities through a partnership with elevator manufacturer Otis, enabling the robots to seamlessly call and ride elevators. This advancement significantly improves the robots' ability to navigate multi-story buildings and conduct thorough patrols.

In addition to its robotic services, Cobalt AI has developed sophisticated AI-powered solutions tailored for security teams. The Cobalt Command Center platform facilitates live remote monitoring of surveillance cameras and alarms. Utilizing AI-driven software, the platform can identify potential security threats in real time by analyzing existing camera feeds. It also manages alarm systems, remote unlocking features, and can generate emergency messages for relevant personnel through phone and email alerts.

Cobalt AI has established partnerships with notable clients, including FedEx and Salesforce, further underscoring its reputation in the security technology sector. Drako expresses confidence in the company’s future, stating, “Cobalt’s monitoring and command center technology is a catalyst for a new era of security.
